PLDT, Lynk complete direct-to-device satellite test in Ilocos Norte

MANILA – Telecommunications company PLDT-Smart and Lynk Global completed a field test of their direct-to-device (D2D) satellite communications service in Burgos, Bangui and Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte.

In a statement on Monday, PLDT-Smart said these areas face the West Philippine Sea (WPS) and are known for pockets of limited terrestrial mobile coverage.

“[The test] underscores the technology’s potential to provide critical connectivity to remote areas and Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs) across the Philippines,” it said.

During the field test, PLDT-Smart and Lynk engineers exchanged text messages between smartphones located in Ilocos Norte and Metro Manila, and accessed key public information platforms, including the websites of Smart, Department of Information and Communications Technology and Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

The D2D technology is meant to serve as a complementary layer to PLDT-Smart’s nationwide mobile network and is particularly valuable during natural disasters when terrestrial infrastructure is compromised.

PLDT chief operating officer and network head Menardo Jimenez said the D2D satellite technology would help overcome the challenges provided by the Philippines’ archipelagic nature.

“D2D satellite technology gives PLDT and Smart a powerful way to overcome the geographic challenges of serving an archipelago. For us, this is no longer just about announcing partnerships, but about delivering real results for real communities. By testing where the technology truly matters, we are taking a step closer to providing reliable connectivity to every Filipino, no matter how remote their location,” Jimenez said.

National Telecommunications Commission Region I Director Glenn Mercado and Engr. Rolly Albiosa joined the PLDT-Smart and Lynk teams as observers in the field test.

“As with any emerging technology, there are areas that still need refinement. But given these early results, we are hopeful that as the solution matures, it can be part of measures to extend connectivity to remote and underserved communities,” Mercado said.

PLDT-Smart and Lynk are planning to expand the scope of D2D tests across different terrains, regional, coastal communities, and maritime routes in the country.

The latest test reinforces results from earlier tests conducted in Barangay Marambong in Pandan, Catanduanes in January.

The tests came after the signing of a Master Services Agreement between PLDT-Smart and Lynk in October 2025. (PNA)
